Received an HD remaster, for the PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, Xbox 360, Xbox One, and PC on January 19th, 2016. This version features 4:3 and 16:9 aspect ratio support, high resolution visuals, redone textures and character models, new alternate costumes options for both Rebecca and Billy, improved lighting, and updated controller options. Prior to the release, Capcom put a video on their YouTube channel that showed exclusive footage from the canceled Nintendo 64 version of the game, comparing it with footage from the 2002 GameCube version and the 2016 HD version. The HD remaster was ported to the Nintendo Switch in 2019 as well.

Series creator Shinji Mikami saw how bored and unenthusiastic the development team for Resident Evil 0 was with creating yet another traditional Resident Evil entry like clockwork. Because of this, Mikami was determined to make Resident Evil 4 a departure from the series' norms.

This is the first main entry in the Resident Evil game series not to have the item boxes for storing items away.  The player can drop items on the ground without discarding them.

Edward Dewey is the only supporting human character in the game who appears in a real-time cutscene. All the other side-characters (Wesker, Birkin and Enrico) are only shown during FMV sequences. It was originally planned for Dewey to loose a hand to a Cerberus, which would be the hand found by Frost in the prologue of the original Resident Evil (1996). This was no longer necessary when it was decided to release a remake of the original first Resident Evil, in which the discovery of the hand was replaced with finding the corpse of Bravo Team's pilot Kevin Dooley.

There are a few gameplay differences between Rebecca and Billy. Only Rebecca can mix chemicals and herbs, and can fit through tight spaces. However, Billy is the only one able to use a lighter and push heavy objects.

The game was originally going to be released to the Nintendo 64 featuring graphics like from Resident Evil 2 (original), and Resident Evil 3 (original). The developers had hoped to make use of the 64DD system, but due to its poor sales, they were forced to resort to cartridges. This would have allowed the 'zapping' system (switching between playable characters) that was impossible on disc-based systems such as the PlayStation. However, storage problems and the prohibitive costs of larger chips caused the production to be shelved, and resumed for the Nintendo GameCube in early 2001 with a new script and voice acting, aiming at a 2002 release.

In the unreleased N64 version, the game character would have to start the train instead of someone mysterious doing it.

Developed by Capcom's Production Team 3, this is the first canonical Biohazard game developed outside of Shinji Mikami's team (Production Team 4).

Resident Evil 0 is the final Resident Evil game to feature fixed camera angles during gameplay.  Games after that would be over-the-should following cameras third-person or first-person perspectives.

This is the first Resident Evil game where the player simultaneously controls two characters, and also the first Resident Evil where you can instantly switch between characters. Despite being advertised as a new direction for the series by having two characters at once, most of the teamwork is required when the characters have to split up to solve puzzles, although there are a few story-driven instances where the characters are forcibly separated.

A very near completed version for Nintendo 64 exists. It was never released and there is a possibility it was dismantled by Capcom shortly after the work began on the Nintendo Gamecube version of the game. The Nintendo 64 version is EXACTLY the same, but with very low quality graphics due to Nintendo 64's small memory and lack of polygons.

Author S.D. Perry wrote the Resident Evil novel Zero Hour which takes place during the events of Resident Evil 0 in 2004.

Rebecca Chamber had worn a red bandana and earrings in Resident Evil (1996), the original design for her in the discarded N64 version of this prequel featured her wearing a beret and shoulder pads; it is unclear if the game would have addressed the discrepancy. However, when development of Resident Evil Zero was shifted to the GameCube, her character was re-designed without the beret and pads. Nevertheless, an action figure based on her early N64 incarnation was released prior to the release of the finished game, which kept the beret.

This game won the GameSpy best graphics awards for the GameCube in 2002.

This game got runner up in the Golden Joystick Awards for GameCube game of the year, behind The Legend Of Zelda: The Wind Waker.

According to publisher CapcomResident Evil 0 has sold 1.25 million copies worldwide since its initial release, while the HD Remaster versions added another 2 million copies to this number

During the game's opening of the Bravo Team, Rebecca's pistol has a flashlight attachment on it. During the game however, the flashlight attachment disappears completely.

In the shot where Rebecca first approaches the Ecliptic Express, there is not a drop of rain in the scene. Seconds into her approach, in the next two shots, rain is shown suddenly falling as though it had been raining for a while.

Billy's handcuffs while in-game are gold, but in the fully rendered FMV's the handcuffs are silver.

The information for the Hookshot device states the weight capacity in kilograms. The setting of the game is in the United States, which uses pounds.

When the crows first appear, the windows in the room break before the crows actually burst through.

Some of the writing on the S.T.A.R.S. badge is upside-down.

During the game, the train travels a considerable distance, which at the speed it is going put the train dozens of miles away from Raccoon City by the time it stops.
